Probe into palace workers’ plight inconclusive (06-07-2010) |

MALACCA: The initial findings of an investigation into the plight of migrant workers at the construction site of the new palace are not conclusive, said Datuk Shaziman Abu Mansor. News from The Star, July 6, 2010.
Action could still be taken against the contractors if the investigation detected irregularities, said the Works Minister.
“The report that I received from CIDB (Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia) shows that the workers’ salary were paid accordingly.
“However, if investigations reveal that there was any abuse of power, we will ensure action is taken,” he told reporters after launching Universiti Teknikal Malaysia’s orientation week here yesterday.
On June 27, The Star reported that about 100 migrant workers hired by 130 sub-contractors working at the RM800mil Istana Negara project site had not been paid their salaries for three months.
Following two police reports made over the matter, both the police and the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission are investigating the allegations.
Shaziman said the ministry would not hesitate to act against errant contractors.
However, he said an initial investigation carried out by CIDB had so far found that the contractors had paid the salaries accordingly.
Shaziman also announced that all engineering degrees accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) were now recognised in countries such as the United States, Britain, Australia, Japan, South Korea and Canada.
He said the breakthrough was made possible following BEM’s success in securing full signatory status in the Washington Accord for the engineering education system in Malaysia.
“This is a major success for the country as it would indirectly be a catalyst for growth in the industry,” said Shaziman.
With this recognition, more foreign students would come here to further their studies in engineering, he added.
